Crit - Postcard from the Edge

People really admired my cards but said that i needed to do something to the back of the postcards and design something for them. They mentioned that i would need to design something that would emphasize the paper cut aspect of them so they don't look so flat and all my efforts of creating something unique don't go to waste! I will experiment with imagery and the design of the placement area for text.

WIP

These are my final papercuts for my postcard brief. I have decided to use black card as i think this is more appropriate for the dark edgy theme, and it creates better shadows when photographed. During the whole process i have had not one single cut! i did have one blade bend and snap in my face though and now have sore fingers from holding the scalpel!

This image below is an example of how shadows could be utilised to further portray the dark and edgy theme. I could maybe try and recreate the shadow effect in Photoshop.

Hansel and Gretel WIP

This is the start of my Black forest series. This is the test for the cutting out of the text and how to link it all together. I have also included some iconic imagery from Hansel and Gretel, candy canes from the house made of sweets and i think the typography is quite fitting too. It also has a floral border that i illustrated but i haven't cut that out yet, i just wanted to see how the thing would work with the typography and image connecting together and to the border.

Postcard design - Collected postcards

Below are postcards i have collected over the years as i have always found it interesting, how something so simple and small can be designed to have something with a huge impact on the front and sometimes the back. I particularly like the postcard from the top image, third from the top, second row down. It is an image of two children in a fantasy forest setting with floral designs, which made me think of Hansel & Gretel This gave me the idea to create a set of postcards from a fairy tale. I will look into Dark and edgy fairy tales to fit with the theme from "the Edge" set by 'DontPanicOnline'

Postcard Inspiration - Sanna Annuka

For my postcard brief i have started to look at Sanna Annuka's work that focuses on folklore and fairy tale type imagery. Sanna Annuka is an illustrator and printmaker with a love for nature and folklore from Finland. Below is some examples of her work that i find inspiring, and there is also a little explanation of each design that is taken from her website here
